I LOVE HIM!
I’d forgive him, unlike Violet.
Yeah, unlike Violet though, he didn’t rape your mother.
It is a show. Not to mention that the character Tate actually felt deep regret for what he did, because he truly fell in love with Violet. His actions after he met Violet shows that Violet had helped him. Not to mention she is stuck in a house with him for the rest of forever. Sooner or later I would think the mother would even forgive him.
Sure he felt ‘deep regret’, but not only did he rape her mom, he killed others. He shot up a school, and killed other people in the house. Even after he met Violet he still killed people. Yeah, its a show, but you said “I’d forgive him, unlike Violet.” saying literary if you were in her shoes you’d be able to forgive him. I can’t even understand that…
Seriously? Okay, I don’t condone anything he has done. Though looking at his life and death anyone could see why he may be a bit messed up. His mother is a mother that could drive the most sane person into complete insanity. He raped Violets mother, only because he wanted to give Nora Montgomery a baby to make her happy. He saw Nora as a mother. Someone to care for and protect him, and I can absolutely see why he would want to help her, because she helped him. Its a show, I’m sure if it were real life I would not feel the same way. Though I absolutely adore Tates character, and the grey area he falls into.
LOL You don’t condone it yet you’re trying to explain to me why he did it? I don’t need explaining, I’ve seen the show. I’ll admit I loved Tate at the beginning but after know what he did I just can’t… Honestly, I wish they didn’t make him the rubber man. That way I could still like him… but because he is and all that stuff he did… I can’t.
So what if he’s fucked up?! Does that really give him the right to do the things he’s done?
You don’t have to condone actions to understand motive.
And because you understand his motive, you love him and forgive him.
Yes, he’s a character, he isn’t real.. but that doesn’t make what you said any less ill or okay. You seem to think there’s this line separating characters from reality, but truth is, rapists are reality. Tate is a rapist. Tate is a character based off of some very real, very sick people, and what he did - though, in essence, was fictitious in that it was on a tv show - was a very real thing. Rape? It happens. All the time.
By saying you’d forgive Tate, you are also saying you would forgive any rapist - so long as you know the rapist truly “regretted” their actions. You would forgive him because he raped Violet’s mother only because - and the rest doesn’t matter, because whatever reason it is is somehow enough to get you to forgive such an act.
If you didn’t condone what he had done, you wouldn’t say you’d forgive him. Especially in Violet’s shoes.
That you say you would, in such a condescending tone, is you saying exactly “if I were Violet and Tate raped my mother and inadvertently killed her and one of my brothers, I would forgive him because he regrets it and besides he only did it because”. If you could forgive someone for raping anyone, least of all someone you loved and who loved you (in Violet’s case, there was mutual love between herself and her mother), I would say there is something terribly twisted about you and you need to get yourself some help. I actually will say that now. And no matter how much you defend yourself with, “it’s just fiction”, it will not change the core of the matter - that you forgive a rapist and would even if it was your own mother he raped.
Fiction or not, that is beyond sick.
Okay, so forgiveness somehow doesn’t equal condoning someone’s actions…? I’m a bit confused. It’s okay, people change their minds all the time mid-argument.
Regardless, Violet (whether right OR wrong) CAN’T forgive Tate. It isn’t her place. Ben SAYS this. IN THE SHOW. You can only forgive (or choose not to forgive) someone who has hurt you directly. If Tate goes through major repentance that lasts a few lifetimes…idk. She can forgive him for the lies, but not the lives he took or the ones he ruined. And even after that, I still don’t think it would be right if Violet allowed him to be any kind of presence in her “life”. Motives, whether understandable or not, doesn’t change the fact that his actions were wrong.
Tate’s ‘regret’ about what he’s done can also be interpreted differently from where you’re coming from. In my opinion, I really do believe that he loves Violet, but that alone can’t possibly redeem him. Not even in his own eyes. If he’s sorry because he wants someone (see: Ben) to think he’s sorry because he’s scared to be completely alone…that is simply not true regret. He’s reacting in an apologetic way to get something that he wants. Which is Violet, back. Basically, if you’re truly sorry, you have nothing to prove to anyone. Plus, everything he did? If he could truly grasp the hurt that he’s caused. If he could honestly say that he now understands what he put all of them through. He would realize WHY Violet needs to keep her distance. Would finally get why he needs to be punished somehow. Which he hasn’t, even if he says he has. If he had nothing to gain, maybe I would buy that he’s sorry. That’s just my opinion and how I interpret the character. And I think it’s sad because people that think like Tate actually exist.
I personally don’t think you need help or that you’re sick. I don’t think you were hurting anyone by posting your view, though I happen to not agree with it. I see fiction in quite a similar way. If I were in Violet’s shoes, I would loathe Tate. But I still like Tate as a character despite everything he’s done. I just do not believe he deserves to be forgiven for a very, very long time.
Everyone has taken this beyond too far. None of you actually know me. I’m not sick or ill. I just like the show, and I enjoy the complexity of Tate. I believe people change, and Tate did. You all throw away the fact that I have stated that it is fiction and that if it were real life I wouldn’t feel the same way. My opinions about a character and my interest in said character, are not how I’d feel for someone who committed said actions with no script. You all must look for people to attack, because none of you had to re-blog. None of you had to label someone you know nothing about as “ill”, or “sick”. I have a huge interest in psychology, and behavior patterns, I analyse most shows I watch, and most actions I witness. just because I enjoy one character of one fictitious show, does not, in any way, mean I think rape is okay. On the contrary I’m highly against it. However I know the difference between reality and television, and will not crucify a show because the storyline went sour. Real cases have my support of justice. But I will not be attacked because you all see an opinion of a show as having some actual standing on my morals and sanity.
